Check out the HLF Laureate Portrait with Endre Szemerédi! We took the chance during #HLF22 to talk to the 2012 Abel Prize recipient about mathematics, his research and his career. Watch the interesting interview here: https://lnkd.in/eHzji8eR
About us
In 2013, the co-founder of SAP, Klaus Tschira, established the nonprofit Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation (HLFF) with the goal of fostering mathematics and computer science. The HLFF organizes the annual Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), a networking conference where 200 outstanding young researchers in mathematics and computer science interact with the recipients of the most renowned prizes in the fields. Another primary focus of the Foundation is turning the public’s attention toward mathematics and computer science, not only to awaken but to strengthen their interest through events and exhibitions held in their Mathematics Informatics Station (MAINS). The HLFF is funded by the German foundation Klaus Tschira Stiftung (KTS), which supports the natural sciences, mathematics and computer science, while striving to increase their appreciation. Education, research and science communication are the foundation’s three primary areas of focus. https://www.hlf-foundation.org/imprint.html https://www.hlf-foundation.org/privacy-policy.html

“I have recognized that nothing happens unless somebody is not satisfied with the status quo. And I believe that to this day, that becoming comfortable is a recipe for no progress at all. And so I am actually always looking for people who are just slightly unhappy.” – Vinton Gray Cerf, 2004 ACM A.M. Many accomplished mathematicians discover their passion early on, often as children. For 2022 Fields Medalist June Huh, this realization did not come until much later in his life. Looking back, there had been flashes of interest and brilliance, but these came from a place of artistic pursuit and a seemingly unrelated game puzzle, illustrating how the paths to mathematical success are as varied as the individuals who walk them. This week at the HLFF Blog, Andrei Mihai looks at the mathematical puzzle that June Huh recalls encountering in middle school, which may have been an indication of his interest and aptitude in math, even if he did not realize it at the time. Pi (π), the mathematical constant equal to a circle’s circumference divided by its diameter, is the subject of annual celebration. It has been a longstanding tradition to celebrate π by calculating the essentially infinite decimal places thereof. Most recently, computer engineers were able to calculate 105 trillion digits of the constant. This week at the HLFF Blog, Katie Steckles looks at various ingenious ways people calculate π, while also examining some older methods from history where the digits were calculated by hand.
